Reclaiming the Meaning of Citizenship
Does anyone else have chills and serious happy days over Barack Obama's announcement speech? We here at Drink at Work are in a tizzy. A presidential candidate who is a scholar, an orator, a thinker, an idealist and a gentleman? Please don't wake us...we're dreaming of a better America.
Oh, and the guy is wicked savvy, too. Visit his site. This campaign is going to harness the power of the Web like no other. Obama '08!!!!!

I could support Obama for President of the Internet. I think I'll be voting for somebody different for President of the United States.
Yeah, progressive, rational idealism...that's so early 90s.
Although I presume you're not a Hillary voter either.
I think the issue is more of whether he can pull it off. He's not been a governor, and I don't believe he has a track record of actually getting things done. Right now he reminds me of John Edwards (from my home state)--pretty, sounds good, but can't yet get below 30,000 feet on his ideas. After 6+ years of an idealogue in power, I'd like to see someone who's more focused on "getting shit done."
Unfortunately, a good choice for the Dems might actually be Mike Easley (governor of NC) who has said, in response to the Democrats who asked of his interest, that he is not interested in running for Prez because he likes actually getting things done.
Idealism is good. Healthy, even. But remember that Bush's idealism over the past 6 years has gotten us into uncomfortable environs.
And that's The Word (tm)...we'll be right back.

Dear, kind Americans
It it easy to understand the appeal on someone representing a stark contrast to the current goombah in office. Very easy, indeed.
But ... please ... take a minute to think about this:
Things have gone less than spectacularly well during the last six years. America has hit its lowest point ever in international standing and one or two messes rather need a spot of fixing.
Surely for the sake of both your country and the rest of the world this time you need to elect someone who actually understands foreign relations and international politics.
And let's face it ... in that context Mr. Obama is at best a featherweight.
