Economist Friedman Dies Aged 94, Enfeebled Dictator Pinochet Dies Aged 91

Don't be sad, everyone. Think of his death not as the end of this being known as Milton Friedman, but as his body being privatized by worms and dirt. Rejoice that Milton Friedman's soul-body connection has finally been deregulated. So no, he didn't just "die." What really happened was he outsourced his consciousness to a higher plane.

So from everyone in America no longer able to earn a livable wage, scrabbling sub-subsistence payckecks together....from the millions of impoverished and unprotected workers screwed over by NAFTA and CAFTA and every other horse shit free market ideologue....

I really like Sean Crespo’s stuff … a lot. Sharp and relevant satire. Lovely. But this one really misses the mark by a most sizeable margin. For satire to work it needs to be founded in some basic understanding of the subject matter. In this particular instance the muse of satire has either been out of town or heavily medicated. Milton Friedman was a scientist not a politician and it is the yardstick of science, not politics that must be applied in accessing his work. And even his most adamant opponents would not deny that his life’s work together with that of Keynes has been the singularly most significant contribution to economics in the 20th. century.

You may not like the politics that have found inspiration in Friedman. This however, is no just cause for such criticism of the mans academic achievements. Similarly one would hardly be justified in making fun of Einstein for causing the threat of nuclear war. Science can not be viewed in isolation of its application - but nor can the two indiscriminately been seen as identical.

Personally I do not wholly agree with the liberalistic economics of Friedman and the Chicago School. But I respect the academic brilliance that revitalized the development of contemporary economic theory. To mention Einstein again, Niels Bohr proved him wrong on several key points - but that does not alter the waste and positive effect Einstein had on modern physics.

I note that Sean finds cause to chastise NAFTA and CAFTA. Wow … populist and nationalistic protectionism has even come to Drink At Work. This remarkably petty train of thought does rather make his comments on the poor people of Chile who suffered under Pinochet ring hollow. In contrast one remembers how Friedman urged the Pinochet regime to bring democracy to the country. Whether or not you agree with Friedman’s findings his agenda was always to bring economic and political freedom to all people - not only those who happen to be born in the US.

Time to read up on your economics and history, Sean - or stick to subject matters more readily within you grasp.

I studied economics at the University of Chicago, and have a PhD in the stuff. I've read Uncle Milt's writing and a whole lot of the stuff derived therefrom, and have written an essay or two about how he fits in to modern economics.
