A Quick Moment with Carol

I think the line "I honestly do..." in I Touch Myself by the Divinyls is the most significant in the song. It reveals the inherent, though coyly hidden, vulnerability of the singer. The song itself is pointedly confessional, so the words, "I honestly do..." seem unnecessary. But in uttering them, the singer seems to say, "Look, I know you think I'm self-possessed and confident, but I need you to know that this is real. I'm a woman. A woman who jerks off to you." It's that need to confess — and to be believed — that reveals the quiet, fragile humanity of a woman fingerbanging herself.

Carol

I’m still not sure that the Divinyls quite meet the emotional depths plumbed by Billy Squier in “The Stroke.” His deconstruction of the male need for regular sexual and emotional relief does for masturbation what Said did for the western perception of the “other’ in his masterwork “Orientalism.” His repetition of the word “stroke” with its undertone of a desperate need for human contact forces the listener to confront his own preconceptions about sex and solitude. Certainly no one who hears Squier sing “You got the motions baby, I got a notion maybe I'll stick around” can ever view their tube of Astroglide in the same light ever again.
