May 12, 2006: Drinks with the Comics Curmudgeon
and Sweet Paprika at D-Lounge

Josh Fruhlinger, aka The Comics Curmudgeon...who said you can't make a living out of reading
the entire comics page daily and then posting wry, pithy commentary on the likes of Apt. 3G,
Mary Worth and BC? Josh is a hilarious writer and he and his wife Amber are lovely, fun, charming
people. We got to hang out with them and Amber's super cool brother Micah on Friday. To show
them how we roll, we decided to take them to Allison Castillo and Ophira Eisenberg's awesome
show Sweet Paprika at the elusive D-Lounge. A good time was had by all.

Ces, Josh, Amber and Micah

I think this looks like a still from a movie.

I'm really digging Allison Castillo more and more, plus I'm thrilled that Sweet Paprika has moved
to Fridays. For one thing, the Drink at Work show no longer occasionally competes with it, and
for another, it's a perfect Friday show. It starts at 10:30, so you can have dinner and a few drinks
beforehand. Then mosey over to the show, which is in a beautiful cabaret space but it's also
super casual. It's simultaneously relaxing and otherworldly. Seriously, check it out if you haven't
been there. If you have, go back.

Gilad Foss...have seen his name a bunch, but this was the first time I caught his set. Very good.

Oh, Amanda Melson, you funny, funny lady.

Bob Powers...in green!

Jeff Kreisler, on a rare break from fighting evil.

Corey and Ces share a moment.

Here, "Josh" (Josh Fruhlinger), a local pump jockey, is reacting to "Wario" (Ces Marcio...Marciu...uh, Ces M.): "Nah, don't worry - those Canadian Mounties never stop anyone. Just stick the bag of coke in your shoe, there'll be no problem." Wario's hirelings gun Josh down in a slomo hail of bullets - and deliver the bag of what is actually bootleg powdered sugar to the Idaho godfather that controls the regional Krispy Kreme market. (Doesn't make any sense - like that stopped Hollywood ever before.)
