My wife and I did the same thing once so we could take a vacation in a town only a couple hours away from her folks without making the "required" visit. However, we told her sister (who completely understood) where we were going and gave her an emergency phone number, just in case...

Sorry, can't think of a damn thing that's funny to say about your folks in this story. Just "wow" and "my sincere sympathies."

The required visit is always tough. Some years before we got married, my wife and I took a roadtrip through my ancestral homeland of Texas. We ended up spending a night in San Angelo, because I wanted to visit my parents' graves and we'd gotten there after the cemetery had closed for the day. As we were driving around town, I mentioned that between my mom's family and my dad's, I'm related to about a quarter of the city of San Angelo, and if I ran into any members of my family, I was just going to run, because if it got out that I was in town but I wasn't stopping at Aunt Loretta's house for the traditional audience -- which would have taken hours -- then I was pretty much dead to them.

Charity didn't believe me until we stopped at a supermarket to grab some provisions for the road. As I was walking through the out door, my Aunt Loretta walked through the in door, and I immediately bolted for the car.

I told one of my sisters this story a couple of weeks ago, and she said that the last time she was passing through San Angelo, she had done exactly the same thing at the same supermarket, only it was Loretta's husband Elwood that she ducked.

Ces - my deepest sympathies all around, but thanks for putting my life in context.

On a short trip back east last year, we decided to stay at my father-in-law's in the city - centrally located to most of our family and friends. My mom went absolutely bat-shit that we weren't staying with her, even though we got to see her and my dad twice. There was no reasoning with her.

It's good to know this happens to other people...

That's weird, I live in Alabama and my parents keep encouraging me to take long trips elsewhere.

I've tried to think of several things to say in response to this post. All that comes to mind is thank you for sharing. Funny and touching at the same time. My sympathy to you and your friend for your loss.

Carol - Seriously we'd understand it... justifiable homicide? I think so.

Sorry to hear about Val's dad. Also, as Homer Simpson would say, "Sweet Merciful Crap!" That story is genuinely terrifying.
