Carol Hartsell Is Only a Man
Why I'm Only a Man
Carol Hartsell
When I was a kid, one of my teachers asked what I wanted to be when I grew up. My response was, simply, “A boy.” When queried further I explained in what I can only assume was an exasperated tone, “Because girls can’t do anything!”

Carol,
I'll never be half the man you are. When I was a kid I read Misty of Chincoteague just to see what the big deal was. In high school, a girl I had a crush on dared me to read Love Story without crying. I lost.
I don't own any Charles Bronson movies. I don't watch pro football. I've seen the original cast of Little Women on Broadway.
Still: “I’M ONLY A MAN!”
I think it's cute how you wish people to fear you...
Ahhh... she's all fighty and shit. Isn't she sweet?
you'll get yours, corey. you'll get yours.
"I'M A BIG GIRL!" No, seriously. I have five older sisters and I'm the second boy so my Dad pretty much bet on my older brother and left me to my own devices. I spent a lot of my formative years in drag (see "five older sisters"). I love musical theatre (I think female characters have most of the best songs). I don't watch football. Action movies bore me. "A Little Princess" still makes me weep openly. I did somehow manage to get married but I insisted my wife keep her last name. Boys are clumsy and weird and obnoxious. Girls are smart and elegant and always know the right thing to say.
"I'M A BIG GIRL!"
HA! You're wrong, of course, but HA!
She's a man, BABY!!
To see Charles Bronson in a *great* movie, check out Once Upon a Time in the West. Great movie. Not much violence but much delightful cruelty. And Bronson is so cool.
I'm only one man!
You ARE a man, Carol...as diametrically opposed to "she's only a woman," as in the Billy Joel (currently playing in Philly, sold out circa 1978). I'm with yello on this...I'd be embarrassed to tell you the movies/shows that have driven me to tears.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Umm...I haven't done the research, but isn't it "She's ALWAYS A Woman" (emphasis mine)? I really don't think Mr. Joel's intent was to be dismissive -- belittling, perhaps, but not dismissive.
