Actually, Delaware has so many tolls because it levies virtually no taxes of any kind on its citizens or businesses; apparently, it's content to milk its accident-of-history location, with I-95 running just through the northern corner of the state, for all it's worth. This has actually been the subject of some acrimonious opinion columns and letters to the editor in the Baltimore Sun for the past few weeks, which culminated (I hope) with a suggestion from a reader yesterday that Delaware be forcibly de-stated and annexed to Maryland, with Delaware's two U.S. Senate seats being handed to Mexico, whiich could then supply the U.S. with limitless cheap and legal labor. No, I'm not making that up.

Bubba the Love Sponge was a Tampa based shock jock. I assume he didn't get religion and join up with Rick.
And josh nailed the Delaware situation on the head. Cecil County Maryland wants the MD toll plaza moved up to the Delaware border which would turn I-95 into a parking lot from Havre De Grace to Exit 9 on the NJ turnpike.
RE: Virginia, I assume that means you went up I-81? Cause THAT'S the long way.... If it was I-95, well then, my sympathies, just be glad you're home already and still not stuck in a traffic jam near Fredericksburg.,
At least you can blame Delaware's tolls for the traffic delays. On I-95 south through Virginia (home sweet home, btw) you can forget about driving over about 30 mph until around Ashland, and there's NEVER A REASON. I find myself *hoping* to find an accident at the end of the jam, dammit.
What numerous tolls in Delaware? There's one at the Maryland state line on I-95 and one at the Memorial Bridge coming from New Jersey on I-295 (which is controlled by a quasi-independent River and Bay Authority). You can avoid the Maryland toll by jumping off I-95 in Elkton and hopping back on in Newark, adding about ten minutes to your trip. You can avoid the bridge by staying on I-95 when heading south from NYC.
One of Delware's big problems is the air pollution caused by all the traffic on I-95; it is the largest uncontrollable source of air pollution in the state and will prevent the state from meeting EPA targets, thus leading to federal penalties. I guess the toll booth is an attempt to recoup a small bit of the loss of funding....
As someone who has routinely driven from North Carolina to Massachusetts (and back) in the last six years:
1) It's not the quantity of toll stops in MD/DE that's the problem, it's the total cost of passing through them that's mind-boggling. Travelling through your state is not worth seven dollars; NJ only charges me like five, and I'm using a lot more than just a small portion of it.
2) Because there's no scenery in Virgina once you've passed through whatever major cities are on your route. It's just trees and road for an endless eternity.
But this last Thanksgiving was our last road trip between my place of birth and my current home, as we've determined that it would now be unwise to employ the vehicle we use for the journey (which will hit 200,000 miles in the next month or two) for anything more than a one-state trip. From now on, we fly and rent.
I-81 in Virginia has nothing on I-40 through Tennessee. Driving through Oklahoma was more thrilling.
RICK AND BUBBA (AKA HICK AND CHUBBA)- Alabama-based and nationally syndicated talk radio show; R and B bill themselves as the "Two Sexiest Fat Men Alive." And their show spouts all sorts of Christian Fundamentalism, Pro-Iraq, and "Women belong at home" propaganda and people (by that, I mean rednecks and morons) eat it up like candy. Its disgusting and insulting to those of us in Alabama who think for themselves.
Having driven many long car trips, I can tell you the most boring stretch of road has to be I-40 from Amarillo to Albuquerque. The most beautiful, I-70 in Colorado west of Denver. Worst traffic, I-95 in Connecticut.
And, yellojkt, if you're travelling to/from south of Delware from/to north of exit 9 on the Turnpike, why would you take I-95? Just take the Turnpike. No reason to go through Philly. (Plus the path of the I-95 is really confusing near Princeton. Supposedly, it's easier now, but from what I see on Google, it still disappears for a while.)
Maryland has a lot of nerve complaining given the exorbitant toll it exacts, for example, at the outlets near Perryville. Whether you're going to the outlets or not, you have to pay it.
And it's easy enough to bypass the first Delaware toll coming from Maryland by getting off '95 at Elkton. Actually, it's not that hard to bypass '95 through Delaware altogether, if you want to.
(I lived in Delaware for 25 years, and still visit family there regularly.)
Well I think for myself and I'm mature enough to see Rick and Bubba for who they are and still be entertained by them. I'm not threatened by anyone who throws out the 'G' word generously.
Ya know what though, when my husband and I were traveling by Truck mind you the Turnpikes are outrageous. We tried to avoid them but it was not that easy. I really didn't see the purpose to charging a toll just to use the road, I have heard they need the money, but honestly where does the money go, certainly not to fix the roads!
