Your Favorite Childhood Holiday Present?
Well, it's Christmastime at Drink at Work.com and once again our minds turn to thoughts of the televised yule log, Santa tooling around the North Pole on a Norelco electric shaver, York Peppermint Patty commercials during A Charlie Brown Christmas, singing cries of "razzle berry dressing" and "woofle jelly cake" along with Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol and, well, let's just say spending a good deal of our holidays in front of the TV during the 70's.
And speaking of the holidays, television and the Me Decade, I would like to share with you my--and my brother's--favorite Christmas present of all time, delivered by St. Nick on December 25, 1977 at our garndparents' house on Staten Island:
The very first edition of the Atari VCS (prior to the 2600 name change). This was indeed Marcello's and my Red Ryder BB gun, our real estate, our, uh, zoo-zitta-car-zay (a rollerskate type of lacrosse or croquet). It also allowed for great hours of fun with our dad, especialy when we realized that the tanks in Combat could drive off one side of the screen and reappear on the other.
Now, if the controllers were not in the way, keen students of the Atari VCS would note that the above console is indeed the original six-toggle big boy and not the four-switch version of later years. They would also remark that there is no way we received the VCS and all the above video game cartridges that one Christmas. Instead, we collected them over subsequent holidays and birthdays, each lovingly kept in their original packaging for I guess this very photo-op a full 28 years later. 28 years. 28. 2-8. So much time passed. Sigh...
Well, now I've gone and officially depressed myself. So excuse me while I partake of some holiday M&Ms, break out the Christmas tree ornaments and get ready to watch Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer tomorrow night on CBS, 8:00 PM (EST), all the while awaiting your answer to the following seasonal question:

I think it was a toss up between my Baby Alive or, later, my ten speed bike.
btw, do not try to search for a web site explaining what Baby Alive was. [it was simply a doll that would both eat and drink. her own special food, that is. and she wet herself. she was talented.] because simply searching for Baby Alive, plus a few other clarifiers brought me pages that said things like "when can my baby chew gum?" and "do they eat babies in china?" The first question is easy, your baby can chew gum when it is old enough to say "can i have a piece of gum" until then, no. and yes, of course they eat babies in china. everyone knows that. right?

I must have been 5 or 6, and I still remember coming down the stairs and seeing it next to the tree. The apartments we lived in had sidewalks everywhere, and a bunch of us would go riding all freakin' day.
On the pic you can't see the hand brake that some models had, so you could spin around -- not dangerous at all!
I see you had Maze Craze, my all-time favorite. Many's the night I whiled away with my fellow unemployed friends drinking and playing Atari.
Favorite Christmas present would probably the new bicycle I got one year. Purple, high-rise handlebars, banana seat and all.
Favorite Christmas present as a wee child: The Fisher-Price Barn. When you opened or closed the doors, they MOO'd! Imagine that, parental approved noise-making!
Favorite Christmas present as a teenager: my own bedroom (in a family of 8, this was a HUGE thing!)
Atari is selling a reissued version at:

Hot Wheels. Any Hot Wheels, except that damn silver Rolls Royce, I had several of those. And we're talking the ORIGINAL Hot Wheels here, red rims and all. Man, those were COOL!
A 1/72 scale model of a B-52. The wing span was over 3 feet and it took up half my bedroom when it was built.
I am such a dork.
How about LEAST favorite?? When I was about 6 I asked for a GI Joe. That's when GI Joe was BIG and looked like a WWII soldier. What did I get? A Ken doll in a sailor suit!!!!!!!!!! Jeeze, did THAT toy get tossed into the closet fast! The fact that I turned out hetro after that experience is, I think, proof that being gay is indeed genetic, and not a "lifestyle choice."
Hey yello -- I once built a model of the USS Enterprise (the aircraft carrier, not the starship) that was over 3 feet long. It was REALLY cool!
I guess that makes us what, fellow dork-travellers? No, wait, that didn't come out right...
Pre "obsessive collector" phase, a shoe box full of Star Wars action figures (circa 1978). Each card was lovingly cut away by Mom, leaving only the figure in the bubble which was then wrapped and put inside the box which was also wrapped. There were about 30 of them in there. It felt like I was opening them for hours. I might have wept. I was 9.
HERE COMES THE ATARI RAMBLING...
I, too, have to say Atari. The morning Pitfall arrived was a great morning.
"Santa" was too lazy to wrap gifts, so when we'd go downstairs Christmas morning there was a giant display of loot. Thankfully "Santa" also took a picture of it, so I can figure out by year what we received as kids. It's kind of an awesome chronicle. Atari cartridges figure prominently.
I don't know if you remember this, but Activision offered high score badges for different games if you sent in a photo of yourself and a TV showing your score. We never sent in the photos, but we have lots of photos of my brother and I in our pajamas in front of hard-to-read TV displays.
I have over 80 Atari games, and still have the console and the games (not the boxes, but I do have the instructions). I even brought them with me to college in 1992 and had many a spirited game of Maze Craze, Warlords, Joust, Sky Diver, Video Olympics ("volleyball"), and more. All time favorites: Adventure, Tutankham, Keystone Kapers, and the ones listed above. Actually I liked Keystone Kapers so much I was a Keystone Cop for Halloween one year. You know how popular the 1920s antics of the Keystone Cops are with kids today!
My mom was obsessed with Circus Atari. My dad hated the thing and thought we should be playing stick ball in a sand lot with the Little Rascals or something.
An entire set of baseball catcher's gear--mask, shin guards, chest protector, and a new glove. Being freakishly tall as a 10 year old (about 5'9") meant that the Little League I played in didn't have equipment that would fit me. Of course Little League was five months away, so I walked around the house for weeks wearing it all until my brother called me on being the dork that I was and threatened to beat me up if I didn't take it off.
Not wearing a cup, I found his logic impeccable.
-Alechemist
Holy Barnstormering Pitfalls did I just get excited seeing that picture. Man. Actually, I was flipping through the channels the other day and Cloak and Dagger was on. I got equally excited during the scene in the store, showing all the unopened games.
I can't remember my favorite, but I'm expecting it was probably Nintendo and Zelda. I spent that xmas vacation eating tubes of raw Toll House dough, skipping my hockey tournament and getting to level 6 before the dreaded return to school.
I may have you all beat for geekdom: my best Christmas present ever was a Texas Instruments 99-4A computer. It ran BASIC programs recorded onto cassettes in a player/recorder that plugged into the back with an RCA patchcord. (The best I did was a database program that held all my LPs and 7" singles.) It had an add-on speech synthesizer that my sisters and I taught to say dirty words, which often required creative phonetic spellings. And it had a game called Parsec that I still think is the best computer game EVER. I miss it.
My dad used to come home for lunch from his store, eat a baloney sandwich in two minutes flat and spend the rest of his lunch hour playing Pac-Man on our Atari 2600. I miss him, too.
When my folks got us our Atari we kinda knew what it was by the shape of the boxes for the game cartrtidges. My parents had piled some on top of the stereo speakers next to the tree. We told them the magnets in the speakers would ruin electronics, like say, Atari game cartridges. The next day all the present were re-arranged. We knew. We couldn't wait.
My brother-in-law just moved and has his living room full of his computer game collection. He has a very low serial number Atari and three Atari Lynxes, a "handheld" game about the size of a Gamecube.
C&C:
To pick just ONE would be tough.
What do you think we are all Ralphie? and dream about the Red Rider beebie gun with a compass in the stock and a thingy that tells time?
Seriously, when I was really young it would have to be my Easy Bake Oven and Operation.
Did we really believe I could bake a cake with a lightbulb?
One holiday I looked under the tree all the boxes looked like clothes boxes. My Mom put my Barbie dolls and all accessories in the clothes boxes. She faked me out completely.
Yes, and as I get older I remember getting Atari.
I love, love, loved Pong, Asteroids and then PacMan.
Board games it would have to be Risk and Monopoly.
My cousin Michael got Stretch Armstrong which provided hours of amusement until we broke it open and caused complete chaos - to the complete dismay of our mothers.
This post has been removed by a blog administrator.
My word, PARSEC was the SECOND best game of all, second only to "Hunt the Wumpass" (music alone makes it worthy of #1. PARSEC was so much better with the vocal adapter too. But I digress...my best present had to be the "Sit N Spin". That, and all of those electronic kits that Radio Shack sold where you could make your own doorbell. Thanks for the reminiscing :)
Did anybody ever take his brother's Stretch Armstrong and tie his feet to your bike and his hands to your best friend's bike and pedal off in different directions until all the limbs snapped off?
Just me, then?
Stewart, I had a brother like you (well, still have him I guess, but he's much nicer now). Came home one day to find him swatting my Mego Superman around the front yard with a baseball bat. Jerk.
Well, it wasn't like he didn't do equally evil stuff to me. And frankly, both of us were absolutely awful to our sister most of the time. (Although one way I've made up to her is that I introduced her to Ces, who she signed to the multimedia-comics company she runs.) One reason why I've always really liked the comic strip FoxTrot is that it's quite good at portraying the tenuous alliances and ever-shifting squabbles between siblings.
Stewart, I agree - that's why I enjoy FoxTrot also. Ever-shifting is right!
While we never had a Stretch Armstrong, most of my stuffed animals were trotted out to play "Moon Landing" with. We made Moon Landers out of Tinker Toys, stuffed the stuffed animals in them, climbed up onto the roof, and lowered/raised the Landers from the roof. Great stuff. (And yes, as a girl I played with Tinker Toys and Lincoln Logs and Tonka Trucks. No dolls. I made up for the lack of dolls in my gigantic, humongous, ridiculous collection of stuffed animals and BREYER HORSES!!!!!)
My best Christmas present was a baseball glove, which I got when I was about seven or eight. It was a "Mickey Mantle" model, so obviously, I'm dating myself. I still have it, except now it says "M..... ...tle" and it has some shoestring holding it together.
Nick Theodorakis
I had an Atari when I was little, but was really too young to really get any benefit from it. So, I think I'll have to go with the Nintendo my brother and I got when I was 10 or 11. We got the cartridge with Mario Brothers, Duck Hunt and World Class Track Meet and the peripherals to go with each game.
This is back when consoles came with two controllers. I also think the whole she-bang cost what we currently spend on just the console with one controller on release.
My dad and I had an almost cutthroat competition on Duck Hunt. (Probably why I love shooting games now.) And my brother, my neighbor, one of my cousins and I beat the crap out of the running mat on our concrete floor.
Then Tetris came along and my entire family was locked in a deadly battle to see who was the Tetris master. (I think I won that one. I remember my dad claiming I wasn't human while watching me decimate his record.) And I still remember the theme to Adventures of Lolo because my dad would sit up all night playing it and my room was just across from the basement door.
When I gave it to one of my cousins about 10 years later, everything still worked perfectly. Nintendo doesn't get a lot of love these days, but they know how to build some hardware.

"I would be interested in the Housing Corporation having a look at the detail of this housing development," she said. "I would want to know it was satisfied that 2m of public subsidy had been well used."
The Housing Corporation said all the homes in question it funded were allocated to people meeting the government's eligibility criteria for affordable housing, in this scheme encompassing those on low incomes, first time buyers and key workers.
