26 Comments:
Cherry Pie. Definitely.
"Way Too Helpful" by The Loud Family
"Love's Been a Little Bit Hard on Me" by Juice Newton
"Tonight I Think I'm Gonna Go Downtown" by Jimmie Dale Gilmore, although "Thirteen" is a good choice.
Heartfelt by the artist? I'd go with Coltrane's "A Love Supreme". He kicked heroin, found a new spirituality and wrote his masterpiece in celebration of the transformation. I'll also throw in "Love's Ring of Fire". Sarah Vowell piece on "This American Life" sold me that June Carter really feared perdition when she wrote it.
Heartfelt you ask? I have to go with "Heartlight" by the perpetually sweaty Niel Diamond
When I got to thinking about my favorite heartfelt songs, I started to hum the harmonica intro to "Far away eyes" Some Girls was also probably the last great album the Stones made.
Yep, thats the best I can do, a twenty five year old song from the Rolling Stones.
I should'nt even be on this site.
"Veronica" by Elvis Costello.
"Seventeen" by Janis Ian. I can't hear the opening bar without crying.
This is going to sound a little crazy, but I always thought that Gwen Stefani was on the edge of a nervous breakdown when she sang "Don't Speak".
Oh, and Til Tuesday's "Voices Carry," although not so much in the chorus itself.
"Convoy" by CW McCall.
Serioulsy though, "Tears in Heaven" by Clapton and "Harvest Moon" by Neil Young struck me....
First thing that came to mind was "Talking Old Soldiers" by Elton John.
"Stay the Night" by Chicago.
"I won't take no if that's your answer...Stay the night! (I'd like to spend it with you)"
See? Not only heartfelt, but candid as well!
"Halleluiah". Jeff Buckley's version.
"Grapefruit Moon," Tom Waits. He's still got one of the greatest voices.
Ok, I guess I need to put a serious answer here.
Crying — The duet between Roy Orbison and kd lang from the "Hiding Out" soundtrack, and later on the posthumously released "King of Hearts."
"Metarie" by Brendan Benson
"Close to you" by The Carpenters.
Although "Convoy" is a close second. Nothing tugs more at my heart strings than hearing "It was the dark of the moon on the sixth of June and a kenworth pullin logs"
Sorry, i'm getting emotional now.
Baby, it's you - Smith
I nominate another Neil Young: "Tonights The Night".
I was going to go with a song that is probably one of my favories - "One" by U2, until I read the comments and saw someone nominate "Tears in Heaven". That is a much better choice, and as the father of a 2-year-old I can't even listen to the song any more - I have no idea how the man can actually perform it.
It has to be 'wheel in the Sky' by Journey ... I mean come on!!
Big Star is a good choice.
I'm also fond of "Someone to Pull the Trigger" by Matthew Sweet and "I'm So Tired" by the Beatles.
John Prine -- "Angel from Montgomery"
Cowboy Junkies "Sweet Jane" always makes me stop in mid beer, as well.
"American Pie" by DOn Mclean
Although "Seventeen" by Janis Ian works too
