"But that's me stumbling away..."

Inspired by the completely out-of-left-field yet much-appreciated a-ha parody on this past Sunday's Family Guy, we present the original MTV video for Take on Me, courtesy of the great mp3 blog Scenestars. (Note: The site discourages direct links so look under the July 19th post.)

Alas, the old bastard that I am I remember when this video first premiered on MTV. When MTV had music video premieres. When MTV had music videos. When an MTV VJ could inspire Mojo Nixon himself to pen a little ditty called "Stuffin' Martha's Muffin."

For extra credit--or simply a chance to show your true age--what was a-ha's second single? (Hint: Not a James Bond theme song.)

I actually bought that album a while ago. Basically that and "Take On Me" were the only good songs on the thing, heh. But, man, what songs! They're awesome.

Beat me to it, Rev.

Man, I hated this stuff when it came out. But now, I'm an old fogey, I love it.

Speaking of MTV, I remember the first vid I ever saw on it: Saga's "On the Loose." Quality.

True confession - I actually saw a-ha in concert. Begged dad to take me. It was a nightmare, even for me. Couldn't hear the music, only screaming 12-year-old girls.

MTV actually still shows the occasional video, but you've got to wade through hours of pure shit to get to 'em, something I shudder to imagine. By the way - the first video I ever saw was "Why Me?" by Planet P. Excuse me, my Liberty Home Med-Care is at the door (creak, creak, creak).

I think the first video I saw on MTV was "Twilight Zone" by Golden Earring. Of course, The Buggles were still in high rotation at that point.

Aagh! Head-spinning nostalgia! Plant P? I HAD forgotten all about that one. "Twilight Zone" was also shown about every 30 minutes for a while there. I also remember "Pointy Headgear" by Shox Lumania and some nameless song by the Aussie group The Sherbs -- two very low-quality videos that got a LOT of airtime.

Man, I loved MTV when it started. I was just finishing college, starting grad school, and would put it on as music background when I studied. There were some real dog videos though: what was that Pat Benatar one as a WWII fighter pilot anyway???????????

"Shadows of the Night!!!" Argh, now that song's in my head. Thank you very much woodrow.

Maybe I can do the same to you -- Billy Squier: "The Stroke"

I think I saw my first video in 80 or 81. It was "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" by Culture Club. I could not discern whether it was a man or woman singing. Some other early ones I remember: "One Thing" INXS; "I Ran" Flock of Saegulls

Does anyone remember a video by a group called "The Members" for a song called "Working Girl"?

LOL sorry archivalist, I LIKE Billy Squier. How about that video where Pat Benatar was supposedly a hooker!!!!!

Hm, woodrow, you've obviously got a thing for Ms. Benatar too...

Anon -- of course I remember that video. The Members started as more of a reggae band, iirc, and were also in that classic 80s concert movie URGH: A Music War. If you haven't seen it, check it out! (And if you have a copy ...)

Archivalist: yeah, she was a babe, and had a nice voice. You ever see the poster of her in leggings? rooowwwlll. But her videos were pure cheese. I think she hired her idiot brother-in-law to make them as part of a class project for his "Learning Annex" class on film.

Actually, I regard the album 'Hunting High And Low" as potentially the zenith if swedish synth rock for the decade of the 80s. And that's STILL one of the best Bond theme songs.

I think it's a great video; a real classic of its time. I continue to be amused by the band member drumming what is clearly a drum-machine line on a single drum.
